Using a Werner Extension Plank to Paint High Ceilings

What You’ll Need

Before painting, make sure that you have all the tools you will need for your project. This includes two A-framed step ladders, a Werner extension plank, painting tarps, painter’s tape, a screwdriver, paint rollers, paint brushes, primer, paint, and an extension pole if needed.

Step by Step Instructions to Paint High Ceilings

1. First, you should remove any furniture from the room so that it is not damaged by dropped or spilled paint. Additionally, removing furniture will give you more space to move around and be efficient while working.
2. If you have flooring that you wish to be spared, lay out tarps or plastic sheets that can catch any paint that is dropped or spilled during the painting process.
3. Remove anything that is going to get in the way of your painting on the surface like electrical covers for outlets.
4. Use masking or painter’s tape to mark off the territory you will be painting and to assure that paint does not get onto surfaces that don’t need it.
5. Turn the electricity of any fixture that is attached to the ceiling you will be working on to prevent electrical injury.
6. Develop your own scaffolding system by utilizing a Werner extension plank. Place it between two stepladders to provide a place to work high enough for you to reach the ceiling that needs painting.
7. Using prime, cut into the sides of the ceiling where you have placed the masking tape. Once all sides are hand painted, a roller can be implemented to finish priming. If you still cannot reach the ceiling with the added help of a Werner extension plank, an extended paint roller can be purchased and implemented to get the right reach.  
8. After the primer has dried, repeat the painting process with you paint color.
