March 2017: National Ladder Safety Awareness Month

Whether you are utilizing a step stool to change a light bulb in the home or are utilizing a 40-foot extension ladder to ascend a telephone pole, using ladder safety is important. Especially if you use ladders for daily tasks during work, it can be easy to oversee or neglect the importance of safety throughout the entire process of using a ladder. Because of this oversight and the overwhelming amount of ladder accidents yearly, the American Ladder Institute, a national nonprofit group dedicated to providing needed information about ladders, has declared March 2017 national ladder safety awareness month.

The American Ladder Institute

The American Ladder Institute provides the safety standards for the United States and Canadian ladder products. Its members are some of the largest ladder manufacturers in the world including Werner and Little Giant. To represent the integrity and safety standards of these ladder manufacturers, the American Ladder Institute provides helpful information about the safe use of ladders so that their products are utilized to the best ability. There are over 300 ladder deaths a year, and the only way to lower that number is to bring awareness to the fact that ladder safety cannot be overlooked in the home or workplace. March is a month where many people will get their ladders out of storage to maintain gutters and roofs because the weather finally allows it, which is why it was chosen for the month of national ladder safety awareness.

Why National Ladder Safety Awareness Month?

The American Ladder Institute believes that the number of ladder accidents, injuries, and deaths can be drastically reduced if awareness about the topic spreads. Along with offering ladder designs that are innovated to provide the best in safety standards, their goal is to have more individuals trained in ladder safety so that employees are more aware of how to properly utilize their ladders. The mission of national ladder safety awareness month is to:

  • Distribute more ladder safety training certificates by The American Ladder Institute
  • Make more people aware of ladder safety issues through safety training modules on the internet
  • Move ladder safety violations from one of the top 10 OSHA safety citation violations
  • Get more people to complete ladder inspection training
  • Get more people to dispose of worn, damaged, and unsafe ladders due to proper inspection
  • Decrease the amount of ladder falls, accidents, and deaths in the year 2017

Don’t start your spring projects without getting the knowledge that you need on ladder safety! To complete ladder safety training and receive a certificate of completion, visit the American Ladder Institute’s website for more information.

Need a New Ladder?
