Keeping Safety in Mind During your Deep Spring Cleaning

Spring is here, and with the warm sunshine comes a list of chores to do around the house. A deep spring cleaning allows your family to be comfortable throughout the warm summer months. Each year, families rush to get their projects completed, but overlooking safety procedures may cut a day of deep spring cleaning short. Make the most out of your deep spring cleaning by paying attention to safety procedures so that you may enjoy the summer months without injury and a dirty home!

Don’t Throw Out your Back!

You’re probably dying to get all of those dust bunnies under the couch, but don’t go at them without knowing the proper way to move your furniture. All too often, people wish to move furniture around to perform their deep spring cleaning but don’t think about the proper moving technique. Without utilizing lifting safety, you could throw your back out and miss out on all the summer fun sitting on the sofa. Instead of lifting furniture and using your back muscles, make sure to use your legs. If you find yourself leaning over, you are using your back. Keep your back straight and bend your knees. If you find that you are not strong enough to lift or move furniture using this method, get a stronger individual to help you or use the help of a dolly or other moving tool.

Protect yourself and Family from Harmful Chemicals

You will likely utilize cleaners to get your deep spring cleaning accomplished. These cleaners contain chemicals that could be harmful to your, your family’s and your pets’ health. Make sure to check each product for chemicals that you or your loved ones may be sensitive to and follow any instructions listed on the product packaging. Additionally, stay away from mixing different chemicals together, as they can create harmful concoctions. A great example of this is ammonia and bleach, which makes mustard gas when combined. Both chemicals are found in many cleaning products, so it is best to use only one product per cleaning project.

Keep Clutter Out of the Way

This may be easier said than done, but clutter should be removed from any walkway during your deep spring cleaning. Clutter can lead to slips and falls, which account for much of the injuries that occur throughout household projects. You will likely need to carry objects around your home throughout your cleaning endeavors, and clutter in your walking area is a threat to trips. Additionally, make sure that floors are dry before carrying heavy objects so that no unnecessary slips take place.

Don’t Rush the Cleaning Process

It’s easy to get in the zone when performing household projects, but make sure that you take your time. Rushing can lead to preventable accidents and injuries. Before performing any activity, ask yourself if you are taking the proper safety precautions. Also, pay attention to your body. Cleaning is a vigorous activity and can take much energy. Stay hydrated and take breaks as needed so that you don’t overdo it and hurt yourself. It’s better for your cleaning to take longer than rush and have to nurse an injury throughout the summer months.

Pay Attention to Ladder Safety during Deep Spring Cleaning Projects

You will likely need to use a ladder to accomplish much of your spring cleaning. Fans, gutters, siding, windows, and more are likely out of standing reach. All too often, people overlook the importance of keeping to safe ladder use and end up falling and getting hurt or worse. Don’t let you or a family member end up another deep spring cleaning injury statistic. Never place a ladder on any surface that is not dry or flat, use both hands when climbing, face the ladder when ascending, and do not attempt to move the ladder while in use.
