Setting Up your Werner Extension Ladder for Use

If you have recently purchased a Werner extension ladder, or are thinking of investing in one of these lengthy devices, it’s a good idea to learn how to properly set it up for use to prevent injury. Hundreds of individuals die each year from falling off ladders both at home and work, and most of these incidents could have been prevented if proper ladder use and safety were taken into account. Don’t be another statistic this year; learn how to safely set up and use an extension ladder before you attempt the job at hand. Follow these steps for a safe and effective way to use your Werner extension ladder!

Selecting the Right Werner Extension Ladder

Imagine trying to use a screwdriver for a job that requires a hammer. The screwdriver is likely not to prove itself helpful and also increase the risk for a forced injury. Ladders are the same way. If you select a ladder meant for a specific application and utilize it for another, you put yourself at risk for unnecessary injury. Choosing the right ladder sets you up for success since each is safety rated for specific applications. Extension ladders are developed for higher jobs since they can reach great heights. The Werner extension ladder that you select for the job should extend 4 feet from the highest point of the structure you intend to ascend, so be sure to select a ladder that is lengthy enough for the job at hand. Additionally, each ladder has a set weight capacity. This number includes your weight plus the weight of any equipment you will take with you while using the ladder.

Inspecting the Ladder and the Job Site

Now that you have the right ladder for the job, you’ll need to inspect both the ladder and the potential site of ladder use. Be sure that the ladder you have selected is in good working condition. This means that there is no damage, bending, or erosion. If you find that the ladder is damaged, do not use it! Either have it repaired or replaced before continuing with the project. Once you are sure that your ladder is in good working condition, check the area that you intend to utilize the ladder. Account for any wiring that may be hazardous while performing the task. If there is wiring, make sure that they are not live or utilize the proper safety equipment to ensure the prevention of electrocution. Additionally, make sure that the surface that your ladder rests upon is level. An unlevel surface can cause unexpected falls during your ladder use, so make sure that your ladder is placed on a ground that is unmoving, leveled, and secure. Lastly, check your local weather if your project is outside. Postpone the ladder use until the weather is not a hazard to your safety. All in all, use common sense while setting up and preparing to utilize your ladder. Better to be safe than sorry!

Proper Werner Extension Ladder Setup and Use

Extension ladders are single-sided, meaning that they have to be rested upon the structure you intend to ascend. If the extension ladder is not set up properly, it can easily lead to a fall. Proper extension ladder setup begins with propping the ladder up against the structure. Set the feet of the ladder against the wall and stand at the top of the ladder, holding the unit above your head and moving toward the structure to rest the ladder against the building. Once it is propped against the structure, you’ll need a safe standing angle before you can climb. OSHA requires a 4 to 1-foot ratio for extension ladder setup, meaning for every 4 feet your ladder is tall, 1 foot of spacing should be allowed measured from the wall to the feet of the ladder. A simple method to accomplishing the safe angle for setup is to stand with your toes touching the feet of the ladder and extend your hands to the rung nearest your shoulder height. A Proper angle would allow for your fingers to touch the rung while your feet are planted touching the ladder’s feet.
